Title: An Ecological Perspective on 1:1 Computing

    Presenter: Tammy Stephens

Description: School districts are complex systems in which all parts are interrelated with one another. Students, teachers, administrators and parents are continually engaged in a set of relationships with every other element in the system. They are living organizations that continuously undergo change.

This paper looks at the evolution of 1:1 (one-to-one) computing programs in school systems through an ecological lens. Schools are seen as complex ecosystems in which laptops are an invading species that compete with everything else in the system for time, money and energy. The paper identifies the environmental conditions that research of 1:1 computer programs show are needed for successful implementation of these programs.  The use of an ecological metaphor is helpful, because these factors should not be looked at in isolation, but in the context of interrelated human activity and their effects on the entire system.

The paper will examine both successful and unsuccessful implementations of 1:1 programs throughout the United States. The author will use an ecological framework as a metaphor to explain the underlying dynamics that lead to these two very different outcomes. She will examine the hierarchical nature of school systems and how the most critical factors needed for survival happen at the local level. The paper also outlines technologies that have historically flourished in classroom settings and the reasons why they have been able to grow in these environments. This will help to explain why the addition of student laptops challenges traditional teacher roles and why the two cannot peacefully co-exist in the same environment.

The paper also identifies keystone species, such as administrators and mediators, and the critical roles they need to play in supporting second order change in order for these programs to survive.  In addition, the paper discusses new types of professional development emerging research shows to be most successful in supporting 1:1 programs.

    Milwaukee Digital Media Conference (MDMC2008)

The Power of Us! Creating the Future Together

Education is not merely about transferring information. It is about contextualizing that information in the real life experiences of the learners, and in relation with the experiences of other learners…It is the relationships among people and sharing contextualized experiences that create emergent knowledge that is the basis of education”~ Mark Federman.

The conference will be held at the Milwaukee County Zoo, July 28th-31st. It will be a hands-on collaborative conference in which we will learn about wikis, digital mapping, digital photography, video-editing, and podcasting.

Registration is $300 per participant. Online registration is available at the conference web-site.

Two graduate credits from Cardinal Stritch is also available for an additional $300. Note: If you took the conference for credit last year, you will be able to retake it. We wrote the course so that it is repeatable due to the fact that digital media is an emerging technology that presents new learning opportunities every year.
